Language Arts and Social Studies

Washington Studies Overview (April 28 - June 17)

On May 1st, we will begin an integrated course, entitled Washington Studies that fulfills a high school graduation requirement for all Washington public school students.  This class has three strands, including Social Studies, Language Arts and Science.

In Science, students have been learning about the geography and geology of Washington. The Social Studies portion will cover government, people, land, and citizenship. During Language Arts, students will complete literature, debate, and/or storytelling units.

Students are required to pass all three of these strands with at least a grade of 60%.  Any grade below this level will keep the student from passing the whole Washington Studies course and they will have to retake the class in high school.

You may follow your child's progress in these strands, just as you have all year from Educator Access. Please direct your attention to those assignments specifically entered under the Washington State History category.  A student's final grade in each strand of the Washington Studies course will be determined by the final average score in this category. In addition, we will send out progress reports on May 14th.  If you child is receiving a D or F, we will mail a notice to you on May 23rd. In the case of a failing grade, your child must work immediately to raise his/her grade and pass the class because of the short timetable involved.

Thank you for your continued assistance and support.
