Reading, Writing, and
Arithmetic
Reading
The children are continuing to work hard
learning letter sounds, sight words, and studying the elements of text. We are
beginning to do more work on reading comprehension, predicting what will happen
in the text, and using picture cues to help understand the main ideas of a
story. The children will be coming home with reading sheets to practice reading
at home. I am encouraging the children to read whenever they can!
Writing
We are continuing to work on letter
formation and writing upper case letters as well as lower case letters. The
students are learning sentence structure and are starting to work on editing
their writing.
Math
Our math theme will be changing to Penguins
next week. The Penguin Unit is one
of the two integrated themes for our math curriculum. The students will be
learning about Antarctica and studying the types of penguins that live there
while learning math skills such as measuring, sorting, and computation. We will
also be doing writing projects about Antarctica, travel, and penguins as well
as reading a variety of books.
We have been studying
the continent of Asia. I have a collection of books in the classroom that focus
on all aspects of Asian culture, people, and animals. The class was taught
origami by some fourth grade students and we have learned about the Chinese New
Year.
Next week we will
begin our Time Line Project. In this project the students will create a time
line of their life and share their time line with the class. I will be sending
home a letter with your child when it is his or her turn to complete the
project.
February 14th is not only Valentines Day but it is also the 100th day of school! To celebrate the first grade classes are having a canned food drive. The goal is for each class to try and collect 100 cans of food to donate to Helpline House. The students will participate in sorting and counting the cans. If you would like to donate canned food items please feel free to send them with your child
