Computer Cleanup Technology Training on Basic Internet Safety and Maintenance

IF YOU GET POPUPS

... in Internet Explorer: To close those windows, do CONTROL W - that will close the active window (the one with a blue bar on top).  Another way to close those windows is to go to the task bar on the bottom of your screen, and right click on what you want to close, and select Close.  Part of the insidious nature of these popups is that by just clicking with your mouse to close it, you are sometimes actually downloading stuff - EVIL!! 

ALTERNATIVE TO INTERNET EXPLORER

Everyone and his uncle uses IE, which is why it has so many viruses and popups.   Carbon is offering us an alternative browser called Firefox.  Firefox does not have those viruses or popups.  Yippee!

TO INSTALL FIREFOX

• Double click on MY COMPUTER and then on the SHARED DRIVE. 
• Look for a folder called carbon.  Open it.  Carbon has placed some spiffy things there. Look for Firefox Setup, and double click on it.  The program will begin to install.
• Click on NEXT, then select I ACCEPT, then keep clicking on Next which will provide you with the default settings, which are fine. 
• When it asks, you can import settings and data from Microsoft Internet Explorer so you will have all your bookmarks. 
• You also have the option to make this your default browser, or the one you use all the time.  (This is optional.) 
• After installing, you will have an icon on your desktop for Firefox, just like for Internet Explorer, and you are free to use it at will!!  

CLEANUP FOR YOUR HARD DRIVE

Carbon recommends that you do this  ONCE A WEEK.

• Open Internet Explorer, and click on TOOLS. 
• Scroll down to INTERNET OPTIONS. 
• In The middle of that box you will see Temporary Internet Files. 
• Click on DELETE COOKIES,
• then DELETE FILES,
• then hop down to the HISTORY section and
• click on CLEAR HISTORY.  

MORE VIRUS PROTECTION

Carbon recommends that we all install Spybot Search and Destroy- this program will root out yucky stuff that your computer has collected while you weren't looking - even while you WERE looking.  Do this once a week, too!

• To install, again go to the Shared Drive, and in the
• carbon folder, you will find
• spybotsd123.  Double click on it, and install-
• click on Next, I agree, and
• Next until you hit
• Install, then
• Finish, then
• OK.  Then, you can use the program.
• Click on Check for Problems on the top, and as it works, a list will come up of the nasty thangs it found. 
• When that process is complete, click on Fix Selected Problems on the top, and OK.
