Mr. Matt
Pedersen
Thanks for
stopping by to check out my website! I thought I would use
this page as an opportunity to tell you a little bit about
myself.
I am a
product of the Bainbridge School District. I went to Wilkes
for elementary school, and graduated from Bainbridge High School
in 1989. After high school, I moved to Connecticut to attend
Trinity College. I earned my BA in Studio Art, and then
moved to Boston, Massachusetts where I worked as an artist for an
animation company. Throughout college I had worked with
local schools as a tutor and taught at after school clubs. I
missed working with kids, and in 1995 I got a job as a teacher in
Nashville, Tennessee.
In
Tennessee I was an art teacher at an all boys private school
called Montgomery Bell Academy. I was also a wrestling
coach, and helped coach our team to several top three finishes in
the state. Tennessee was an exciting, and different place to
live. As much as I enjoyed it, I realized that I loved the
Northwest better, and moved back to the Puget Sound area after
four years of teaching in Nashville.
A few years
after being back, and exploring some other job possibilities, I
went back to school and earned my MA in education from Antioch
University. This is currently my third year working in
Bainbridge School District, and my second year at Sonoji Sakai.
I feel lucky to be able to teach in this community.
In addition
to teaching at Sakai, I am the head wrestling coach at Woodward,
and I am an assistant wrestling coach at BHS. I started
wrestling in the seventh grade, and wrestled through college, and
I love giving back to the sport that means so much to me.
I live in
Suquamish, and when I am not teaching or coaching, I am usually
working on my house, or my property. Currently, I am
remodeling, or rebuilding my home there. I like working with
my hands, and being outside, plus there is a lot of math involved
in construction. I am constantly adding and subtracting
fractions and whole numbers, and using algebra to see if my
structures are square.
