Jo Vander Stoep is the principal of Sonoji Sakai Intermediate
School. 2001-2002 marks her 23rd year as a public school educator.
She has been a teacher and administrator in Washington State in the Auburn,
North Kitsap, and Bainbridge Island school districts. She was hired to be
the planning principal at Sakai in 1998. She is proud to be the principal
of a beautiful, new school and to have the opportunity to work with outstanding
staff, students, and parents.
Our school was named Sonoji Sakai Intermediate
School to honor the Issei, or first generation Japanese Americans, who came to
Bainbridge Island. In our studies of American history, as well as in our
art installations, we honor this history. You might be interested in

family history at this web site. |

Sakai Intermediate School serves students in
grades five and six. Our goal is to meet the unique needs of students at
this age. We are more like an elementary school, than an intermediate
school. Our students have one or two classroom teachers, and have a choice
of band or general music electives. All students take p.e. and art.
Our daily
schedule gives you an idea of a typical Sakai school day. We have also
included our Sakai
Handbook .
Partnerships are vital to our school.
Parents and community members provide important support for our students and
staff - on field trips, leading academic groups, as guest speakers, doing
clerical work, funding special projects, serving on committees, and more.
We keep parents informed through our newsletter, the Coho
Connection, which is published bi-weekly.
For 2001-2002, Ms. Vander Stoep had a goal of creating her own web
page. This is her initial attempt. She hopes you find helpful
information presented in a logical way!
