· Ask your child what he or she did in math class today. Ask him or her to give details and explain.
· Students will have math homework each weekday night (M-Th). Review homework with them. If they say their homework was completed at school, ask them to bring it home regardless.
· Have high expectations. Children’s math achievement is shaped, and limited, by what is expected of them.
· Students are encouraged to resubmit homework for a higher grade. Some parents require their children to redo all homework assignments that earn a "2".
· Expect your child’s homework to include more than simple computation worksheets. In fact, the "Investigations" program does not teach the standard multiplication and division algorithms. Additional resources are available if you wish to work with your child on these skills.
· Expect some confusion to be a part of the learning process but emphasize that effort, not ability, is what counts. Math is understandable and can be figured out.
· Avoid conveying negative attitudes toward math. Never tell children not to worry about a certain kind of math because it will never be used.
· Give your child meaningful problems that use numbers or shapes while you are going about everyday life. Ask your child to explain what he or she did.
