Ms. Browning, the  counselor from Woodward, came and talked to our class.  Students received the registration/elective choice forms.  They are to be turned in, signed by a parent, to the exploratory teacher by Monday, May 12.  Time to discuss Woodward electives!

Monday is our Islandwood field trip.  Be sure to dress in layers, since it will be chilly and damp in the morning.  Also wear appropriate shoes for outdoor activity.

Parents, Monday was the official progress report day. If you have not gone on mygradebook recently, please log on and check your student's grades.  Students have until next Monday to make up missing work or to complete work on assignments that are graded less than R3.

Students should now be working on the action plan  for the Make A Difference research projectWe check their journals (which have to be initialed by their parent) every Friday.

         Catenary time

There are 2 telephone poles that are each 100 feet tall. A 150-foot rope is attached that will hang from the top of 1 pole to the top of the other pole.  The rope will droop down. (the shape formed by that drooping rope is called a catenary)  What must the distance be between the two poles so that the lowest point of this catenary is 25 feet above the ground?

Dividing the Smart Kids

My freshman class in college was over a 1000 students; in fact it was 1058. And half of them were smart enough to advance beyond first-semester calculus. So that whole group of kids was then allowed to enroll in Calculus 2. Each of those sections of advanced calculus had the same number of students. How many sections were there?

Seems like not enough information, right? But there is.

Eight Coins

You have 8 coins.  One of them is a counterfeit.  It looks the same as but weighs more than the others.  You have a balance scale. What is the smallest number of weighings you can do to identify the counterfeit coin?
