OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENT AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS 

The Bainbridge Island School District is seeking parents and other interested community volunteers to participate on a variety of school district advisory and program review committees for the 2007-08 school year. Committee vacancies are anticipated on the following advisory committees:

Instructional Materials Committee

Title VII Indian Education Parent Committee

Multicultural Advisory Committee

K-12 World Language Program Review Committee

K-12 Language Arts Program Review Committee

Health Education Advisory Committee

Special Education Program Council

Technology Advisory Committee

Highly Capable Education Advisory Committee

All of these district-level groups include parent, community and school instructional staff member representation and meet on a regular basis during the school year. If you are interested in participation, please obtain a volunteer application from either the Bainbridge School District administrative office or any of the public school offices. COBI CALL FOR PARTICIPATION                                           

The City of Bainbridge Island is seeking citizen volunteers for the Community Forestry Commission, the Board of Ethics, the Housing Trust Fund Executive Committee, and the Salary Commission.  Please submit your application as soon as possible and prior to the end of business on Aug.10.  
The City is seeking volunteers for the:
Community Forestry Commission
Commissioners advise the Mayor and City Council on urban forestry issues, recommend policies and regulations to preserve urban forests, and coordinate with other city programs, agencies and community groups.  Commissioners serve for three years.
Board of Ethics
The Board's goal is to promote an understanding of ethical standards for City officials, officers and contractors, and for the general public.  The Board is responsible for training elected officials and providing advisory opinions and waivers regarding the Code of Ethics.  Members serve for three years.
Housing Trust Fund Executive Committee
The Housing Trust Fund's mission is to encourage development of moderate and lower income housing, and to provide for income groups not serviced by other funding sources currently available. 
Salary Commission
The Commission is responsible for preparing and presenting a study of the compensation and benefits of the city's elected officials.  Commissioners serve for three years.

BAINBRIDGE & BEYOND READS

Bainbridge & Beyond Reads is an opportunity to engage the Bainbridge and Kitsap communities in reading and discussing a common book. Starting now during the summer, book groups, students, and the general public are invited to read Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Related events will take place during September. This community program is sponsored by Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council, the Bainbridge Public Library, and Bainbridge Island School District, among other organizations. BITV CLASSES

There are an array of new classes at Bainbridge Island Television, our local public access station. For beginners there is One Take Video and Creative iPhoto Slide Shows; new intermediate classes include Making Your Promotional Video, Location Sound, Guerrilla Documentary I - Production and Guerrilla Documentary II - Post-Production & Editing, and The Creative Side of Editing; summer youth camps include Teen Filmmaking Workshop and Fantastic Film Race. LIBRARY SUMMER READING - "GET A CLUE!"

Young detectives are invited to join a Summer Reading mystery at the Library this summer, “Get a Clue!” Starting June 16th, read (or get read to) for ten hours and receive a FREE paperback and a Kitsap County Fair & Stampede ticket (while supplies last). Read for more than 20 hours this summer and get an invitation to the Super Readers Party, a special awards event to celebrate your achievement. Fun & educational events -- over fifty events are planned on Tuesday’s in June, July and August for pre-school & school-age kids.  Special Teen events will be held at each library, including a “Teen Mystery Night” and a live concert by “The High Strung” band.  Check out the complete list of summer events at www.KRL.org.

SUMMER EDVENTURE PROGRAM FOR KIDS

From July 9 through August 24, Summer Edventure Programs for Kids will be held at Olympic College Poulsbo. These enrichment programs are for kids ages 8 - 17. FIELD'S END HOLDS FALL CLASS FOR COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAYS
Registration for “Who I Am: Writing the Personal Essay for College Applications” with instructor Marian Merkel opens August 15. The class,
sponsored by Field’s End, a writers’ community affiliated with the nonprofit Bainbridge Public Library, will be held on Tuesdays, September 25 and October 2 at the Kallgren Room, Bainbridge Island Commons. Open to students entering college in ’08 or ’09. Limited to 12 students.  The class fee is $80.  Pre-registration essential.  Content, details at www.fieldsend.org.

AFS INTERCULTURAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Have you ever considered hosting a foreign exchange student for a year? AFS host families are people who care about youth, education and

the future; they give of themselves, and gain life-long memories and friendships! AFS provides orientation, a local Liaison who meets regularly with the student, host family and the school. The student has personal spending money and full health insurance coverage. There are wonderful kids from over 50 countries , and we need to place them with Host Families prior to their being accepted by BHS or EHHS.

AMERICAN SEWING GUILD MEETS FIRST THURSDAY OF EACH MONTH IN WINSLOW

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!

Bainbridge Youth Services is seeking volunteers! Support your local youth by lending a hand on our fun fund raising events. Opportunities include: the Chilly Hilly bike race, the 4th of July Fun Run, Jam labeling, and other community events. BYS SERVICES CONTINUE - FROM HIRE A TEEN TO COUNSELING

*Do you need someone to do yard work, wash your car, clean your house, keep an eye on your children, cook dinner, or help in some other way? Or, are you a teenager who really would like to work? Bainbridge Youth Services coordinates job opportunities for teens. Call BYS at 842-9675 with a particular need, and BYS will provide you with the name of a registered teen who has interest in that type of job, or  you can call to see what services teens offer. This is a great opportunity for teens and adults alike, building meaningful relationships and providing skill development for young people. This is a no-charge service for those who need a youth to do a job…you pay the youth directly. Youth who are interested in working can come in from noon to 4 PM to the BYS office and see the jobs posted on the board.  Registration costs $5, which is good until the youth is 20 years old!  Contact us at 842-9675 to get information on jobs. 

*No-cost, confidential, professional counseling is available for youth ages 12-19.  BYS has a counselor on duty every day of the week this year, Monday through Friday.  Contact a counselor by calling 842-9675 and leaving a message or contact the Executive Director Lois Lee at 780-1849 to get specific information.

 

"CLASSICS 2 GO" AT THE LIBRARY

Kitsap Regional Library has introduced a new collection of the top 75 classic titles that Kitsap students are expected to read. Multiple

copies, in a "teen friendly" format, are available for 3-week check-out at the Bainbridge Island Library. Next time you have a special title

assigned, or if you are trying to build your "classics" repertoire, check-out the public library. Search for titles like "Cry, the Beloved

Country", "Iliad", "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Treasure Island" in the Library catalog at www.KRL.org.

 

LIVE HOMEWORK HELP through Kitsap Regional Library

Students in Kitsap County never have to be stumped by a tough homework assignment again!  “Live Homework Help”, an online tutoring service that connects students to expert tutors in math, science, social studies and English via the Internet, is now available for FREE through Kitsap Regional Library.  This service allows students, 4th – college intro, to connect to an expert tutor from any PC connected to the Internet.  Students can access the service every day, 3:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. and receive homework help from a qualified live tutor via the Internet.  

Go to the Library website, www.KRL.org and select the Live Homework Help option: Select their grade level (4th – community college); select the subject they need help with; click "Connect"! All tutors are certified teachers, college professors, professional tutors or graduate school students from across the country. Every tutor has completed a third party background check and a comprehensive training program.

BPA OFFERS THEATRE SCHOOL CLASSES FOR GRADES 1 - 12 ALL YEAR LONG!

RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY SEVERE BRAIN DISORDERS

Family to Family Support Group - Family members of individuals with severe brain disorders (mental illnesses) have the opportunity to attend monthly meetings sponsored by NAMI-Kitsap.  Families learn about community supports, share their experiences, and learn problem-solving techniques.  Meetings are held from 7:00-8:30 pm on the second Monday of each month at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, downtown Winslow on the corner of Winslow Way and Madison Avenue.  Please call Jane Cartmell (206) 898-6092 or Nancy Sias (206) 842-7621 for more information.

Family to Family Twelve Week Class - NAMI-Kitsap sponsors a free twelve-week class for family members and other caregivers of those who suffer from severe brain disorders (mental illnesses).  The course is taught by trained family members.  All course material is furnished at no cost  to participants.  The curriculum focuses on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), clinical depression, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).  The course discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaches the knowledge and skills that family members need to cope more effectively.  Please call Karen Johnson (206) 321-6362 to register for the September 4, 2006 session.

Peer Support Group - NAMI-Kitsap and Helpline House jointly sponsor a support group for individuals coping with symptoms of brain disorders (mental illnesses).  Meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month from 1:30-3:00 pm at Helpline House, 282 Knechtel Way NE, Bainbridge Island.  The group’s purpose is the demystify brain illness by creating hope through shared practical experiences, build support for one another, and develop a vision of recovery.  For information, please call Jane Cartmell   (206)898-6092  or  Nancy Sias (206)842-7621.
