Do not plagiarize. Plagiarism is stealing others' words. Quoting a source word-for-word, paraphrasing, summarizing or changing just a few words without acknowledging the source is plagiarism. Bainbridge High School, all colleges and universities, and the legal system deem plagiarism illegal and/or unethical. The teachers at Bainbridge High School will take action against cases of plagiarism when discovered. At colleges and universities, plagiarism may result in expulsion. Alex Haley, the author of Roots, inadvertently plagiarized a passage from the novel Jubilee; he settled the case by paying the author a large sum of money.
